American Coin Silver Butter Knife, Medallion. Marked (?—dolph?) S.F. Classical helmeted male
right facing figure. This pattern is often attributed to the Vanderslice Co., since pieces frequently
bear that company’s retail stamp. A number of California collectors and authorities, including
Edgar Morse of Argentum Antiques in San Francisco, believe that Vanderslice, although a
leading manufacturer, never produced a medallion of its own. To further confuse the issue, it has
also been suggested that Vanderslice (later Shreve & Co.) obtained part of the Schulz & Fischer
factory after the firm went out of business and reproduced medallion items from the original dies.
Length 7 ½”. Struck on one side only. Engraved “Hattie” in script.
