An apparently unmarked heavy gauge silver plate on Pak Tong crème jug w/ boxwood handle
and finial in the Christopher Dresser Style. The tightly fitted lid is ingeniously disguised and the
spout, finial and handle have identical stylistic origins. An excellent piece of silver plate. Height
3” X 5 ¼ to handle end. This piece is either Art Deco or possibly one of the English designer,
Christopher Dresser’s own designs which would make it a hundred years earlier. Very unusual.
Very nice. W/the exception of one minor dent; no damage. 5.6 oz of Silverplated Pak Tong*.
*Pak Tong is a white brass invented by the Chinese. Germany copied the concept but were
unable to replicate the strength of the original. It is where the confusion comes from in saying
German Silver has no silver in it. Silver made in Germany is of the 800F standard but German
Silver is an inferior pak tong. The British patriotically called their version Brittania. Brittania and
German Silver both dent easily and tarnish in turning black. Both being very soft metals they
dent easily are thick, clumsy and once the silver has been rubbed off the black reappears very
quickly whereas Chinese Pak Tong is nearly hard as steel and takes plating w/ease and beauty.
It was forbidden to export this metal from china under penalty of Death for the Chinese used it in
the manufacture of some coins.
